Vehicle-Mounted Plastic Tanks

Union | Perspex Online
Ute Tray HDPE Water Tank

Overview

Vehicle-mounted plastic tanks are used for storing water, waste, fuel, chemicals, and process fluids in utes, 4×4 vehicles, trucks, trailers, and service vehicles.

We manufacture custom vehicle-mounted plastic tanks to customer drawings and specifications, supplying welded tanks designed to suit tray dimensions, chassis layouts, and mounting requirements.

Plastic tanks are commonly used in utes and 4×4 vehicles due to their corrosion resistance, lighter weight compared to steel, and ability to be fabricated to fit tight or irregular spaces.

Custom Manufactured to Suit Utes & 4x4 Setups

Vehicle tanks are rarely off-the-shelf — especially for:

  • Dual cab ute trays

  • Canopy setups

  • 4×4 touring vehicles

  • Service bodies

  • Under-tray installations

  • Custom tray builds

We manufacture tanks to suit:

  • Tray dimensions and wheel arches

  • Canopy layouts

  • Chassis clearances

  • Existing mounting brackets

  • Pipework and pump locations

We work from:

  • CAD files (STEP, DWG, DXF)

  • Dimensioned sketches

  • Site measurements

  • Existing tanks supplied as samples

Tanks can be supplied as one-off builds or repeat production runs.

Typical Applications

Vehicle-mounted plastic tanks are commonly used for:

  • Water tanks for utes and 4×4 touring setups

  • Trade and service vehicle tanks

  • Spray tanks for agriculture and landscaping

  • Chemical storage tanks

  • Waste and grey water tanks

  • Mining and civil site vehicles

They are widely used across trade, agriculture, mining, off-road touring, and civil industries.

Key Performance Requirements

Vehicle tanks must account for:

  • Road vibration and corrugation (especially in 4×4 use)

  • Fluid sloshing during braking and cornering

  • Secure mounting to trays or chassis

  • Weight distribution within the vehicle

  • UV exposure for exposed installations

  • Chemical compatibility

Incorrect mounting or insufficient support is the most common cause of tank failure.

Recommended Materials

Manufacturing & Fabrication

Vehicle-mounted tanks for utes, 4×4 vehicles, trucks, and service bodies are fabricated from flat plastic sheet and assembled using controlled welding and machining processes.

Each tank is built to suit the specified dimensions, mounting method, and operating conditions.

Design & Panel Preparation

Tank panels are cut and prepared to match the required geometry and fitment constraints. This includes:

  • Precision-cut base, side, and lid panels

  • Reinforcement panels where required

  • Baffle components for surge control

  • Mounting flanges and fixing interfaces

Panels can be CNC cut to ensure accuracy and repeatability, particularly where tanks must fit tightly within tray or canopy spaces.

Plastic Welding

Structural tank fabrication is completed using plastic welding techniques suited to HDPE or polypropylene.

Welding is used for:

  • Seam joining of tank panels

  • Structural reinforcement of corners

  • Integration of internal baffles

  • Welding of threaded outlets and fittings

  • Attachment of inspection lids and access ports

Correct weld preparation and technique are critical to long-term durability, particularly in high-vibration 4×4 environments.

Internal Baffles & Reinforcement

For transport applications, internal baffles are often included to:

  • Reduce fluid surge under braking

  • Improve vehicle stability

  • Minimise tank wall flex

  • Extend service life

Reinforcement may also be added around:

  • Mounting points

  • High-stress corners

  • Large flat wall sections

Off-road and corrugated-road use typically requires additional structural consideration.

Mounting & Integration Features

Vehicle tanks can be fabricated with:

  • Integrated mounting tabs or flanges

  • Slotted mounting holes to allow chassis flex

  • Threaded inserts and welded fittings

  • Pump and hose connection points

  • Access hatches and inspection ports

Mounting design should allow for movement, expansion, and vibration without transferring stress directly into the tank body.

Quality & Fitment

Before supply, tanks are:

  • Checked against supplied dimensions

  • Inspected for weld integrity

  • Verified for fitting locations and outlets

Where required, tanks can be pressure or leak tested prior to delivery.

Production Runs

We manufacture both:

  • One-off custom tanks

  • Repeat production runs for fleet or trade use

Repeat orders can be produced from saved drawings or templates to maintain consistency across vehicles.

Design & Installation Considerations

When designing tanks for utes and 4×4 vehicles, consider:

  • Allowance for thermal expansion

  • Slotted mounting holes to accommodate chassis flex

  • Reinforcement around mounting points

  • Clearance from exhaust systems

  • Access for cleaning and inspection

  • Proper support across the tank base

Off-road conditions increase load stress, so support design is critical.
