Frequently Asked Questions

What are PTFE (Teflon) sheets used for?

PTFE sheets are used in applications requiring extreme chemical resistance, low friction, and high temperature stability. Common uses include gaskets, seals, slide plates, wear pads, valve seats, chemical linings, and electrical insulation. PTFE is widely used in chemical processing, food manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and engineering.

What are the key properties of PTFE sheet?

PTFE offers outstanding chemical resistance, a very low coefficient of friction, excellent electrical insulation, and continuous operating temperatures up to around 260°C. It is non-stick, non-reactive, and unaffected by most acids, solvents, and chemicals. PTFE is softer than most engineering plastics and can creep under load.

Is PTFE sheet the same as Teflon?

Teflon is a brand name commonly used to describe PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene). PTFE is the actual material. Many manufacturers produce PTFE sheets that meet the same material specifications without being sold under the Teflon brand name.

Can PTFE sheet handle high temperatures?

Yes. PTFE performs well across a wide temperature range, from approximately -200°C up to +260°C in continuous service. It maintains stability where most plastics fail, making it suitable for high-temperature seals, gaskets, and insulation applications.

Is PTFE sheet chemically resistant?

PTFE has exceptional chemical resistance and is virtually inert. It is unaffected by most chemicals, including strong acids, bases, solvents, and hydrocarbons. This makes it ideal for corrosive environments where other plastics or rubbers would degrade.

Is PTFE sheet strong enough for load-bearing applications?

PTFE has low mechanical strength compared to materials like nylon or acetal and is prone to creep under constant load. For load-bearing applications, filled PTFE grades (glass-filled, carbon-filled, bronze-filled) are often used to improve strength, wear resistance, and dimensional stability.

Can PTFE sheet be machined?

Yes. PTFE can be machined using standard tools, but it behaves differently to harder plastics. It is soft and flexible, so sharp tools, correct clamping, and controlled feeds are required. PTFE is commonly machined into gaskets, seals, and custom components.

Is PTFE sheet suitable for food contact applications?

Yes. Virgin PTFE is commonly used in food processing and pharmaceutical applications due to its non-toxic, non-stick, and non-reactive properties. Always confirm material certification if compliance with specific food contact standards is required.

Can PTFE sheets be cut to size or supplied machined?

Yes. PTFE sheets can be supplied cut to size and machined to drawings. This includes CNC machining for gaskets, seals, and precision parts. Machining PTFE to finished dimensions helps reduce material waste and installation time.
