Why Mining Sites Specify Polycarbonate and HDPE Guards

Mining equipment throws rock fragments, dust, and slurry at guards that need to survive years of abuse without cracking or clouding. Polycarbonate sheet delivers roughly 250 times the impact resistance of glass, so a guard panel absorbs a direct hit from ejected material without shattering. Where visibility is not required (chute deflectors, wear shields, and panel cladding), yellow mining-spec HDPE gives high-visibility identification with excellent abrasion resistance.

Both materials are significantly lighter than steel or glass equivalents, cutting manual handling risk during installation and changeover: a real advantage when guards sit three metres up a crusher housing and a crane change costs half a shift.

Choosing the Right Material for Each Guard Application

Polycarbonate is the first choice for guards where operators or cameras need to see through to monitor equipment: vibrating screens, jaw crushers, conveyor transfer points, and grinding mills. It meets AS 4024 machine guarding requirements for operator visibility while still absorbing heavy impacts. For UV-exposed outdoor guards, specify UV-stabilised polycarbonate to prevent yellowing over time.

HDPE and UHMWPE sheet are the picks for guards where abrasion and chemical exposure are the primary threats: acid mist near leach pads, slurry splash around thickeners, and coal dust in transfer chutes. UHMWPE outlasts standard HDPE in high-abrasion zones and is the preferred liner behind bolt-on guard panels in crusher housings.

Common Mining Guard Applications

Crusher and screen guards are the highest-volume order we process for mine sites. Panels are typically 6-12mm polycarbonate with CNC-routed bolt holes on standard centres, supplied as drop-in replacements that maintenance crews can swap during a scheduled shutdown without on-site drilling. We also supply full guard sets for conveyor drive housings, pump enclosures, and electrical switchroom viewing panels.

Yellow HDPE safety screens and deflector panels are common around walkways and access platforms where high visibility is a safety requirement. The yellow colour is UV-stable and does not fade under prolonged sun exposure, keeping the panel compliant with site colour-coding standards for the life of the installation.

CNC Routing, Drilling, and Finishing

Every guard panel can be CNC routed to your drawing: bolt holes, cable pass-throughs, ventilation slots, and radius corners all machined before dispatch. For multi-panel guard sets (100+ panels for a crusher rebuild, for example), we batch-route from a single program file to guarantee consistency across every panel in the set.

Panels arrive labelled and packed in sequence for installation, so the crew on site can work through the set without sorting. If your site requires material test certificates or compliance documentation, let us know at quoting stage and we will include them with the order.

Ordering Large Guard Sets

For bulk guard orders (shutdown panel sets, new-build equipment packages, or scheduled replacement programs), send us your drawings or a panel schedule and we will quote the full set with volume pricing. We regularly supply 50-200 panel batches for major shutdowns at iron ore, gold, and coal operations across Western Australia, Queensland, and New South Wales.
