Why Acrylic Is the Ideal Privacy Screen Material

Acrylic sheet delivers the visual screening of frosted glass at a fraction of the weight and with none of the shatter risk. A panel of Perspex Frost sheet blocks direct line of sight while still allowing natural light to pass through, making it the go-to material for balcony screens, fence infill panels, and outdoor room dividers where privacy and daylight both matter.

Because acrylic is roughly half the weight of glass, privacy screen panels can be mounted to existing fence posts, balustrade frames, or lightweight timber battens without the structural reinforcement that glass panels demand. For exposed or high-wind locations, polycarbonate sheet offers even greater impact resistance while maintaining a similar translucent appearance.

Frosted, Tinted, and Decorative Screen Options

Perspex Online stocks a full range of screen-suitable sheet finishes. Perspex Frost is the standard for residential privacy screening, giving an even satin diffusion across the panel. Perspex Tints in smoke, bronze, and grey offer a darker screening effect while still allowing some light transmission, popular for office partitions and contemporary fence panels.

For a fully opaque screen, solid-colour acrylic sheet blocks both light and line of sight, and is available in white, black, and a range of colours to match an existing colour scheme. Combining frosted panels with solid-colour accent strips is a popular design approach for modern outdoor entertaining areas.

Residential and Commercial Privacy Screen Applications

Residential privacy screens are most commonly installed on apartment balconies, courtyard fences, spa and pool surrounds, and between closely spaced properties where a solid timber fence would block too much light. The translucent quality of frosted acrylic solves the privacy-versus-daylight trade-off that solid fences cannot.

In commercial settings, acrylic privacy screens are used as office partitions, waiting room dividers, medical consulting room screens, and restaurant terrace separators, providing visual separation without creating the closed-in feel of a solid wall.

Custom Cutting and Installation

Every privacy screen panel is cut to your exact dimensions on our CNC router or laser cutter, with holes pre-drilled for your mounting hardware. Panels can be supplied with polished edges for a clean frameless finish, or with raw edges for panels that will sit inside an aluminium or timber frame.

Send us your screen dimensions, preferred finish, and mounting method, and we will quote panels cut and ready to install.

Wind Loading and Thickness Selection

Panel thickness should account for both the unsupported span and the expected wind load at the installation site. As a general guide, 6mm acrylic suits sheltered screens up to about 600mm wide between fixings, while 8-10mm is recommended for larger panels or exposed balconies. For extreme wind zones, polycarbonate sheet in the same thickness range provides a significant strength advantage over acrylic.

We can advise on thickness selection based on your panel dimensions and site exposure. Provide the panel size, fixing centres, and location and we will recommend an appropriate sheet thickness.
