Why Polycarbonate Is the Material for Blast-Resistant Glazing
Blast events on mine sites (whether from controlled blasting operations, pressure vessel failure, or dust explosions) generate pressure waves and high-velocity fragments that glass cannot survive. Polycarbonate sheet absorbs blast energy by flexing rather than shattering, containing fragments on the protected side of the panel and maintaining the barrier even after significant deformation.
At 250 times the impact resistance of glass and roughly 30 times that of acrylic, polycarbonate is the only transparent plastic rated for blast-protection applications. It is used extensively in mining control rooms, drill rig operator cabins, shot-firing shelters, and exclusion zone barriers across Australian mine sites.
Control Room and Operator Cabin Glazing
Mining control rooms near blast zones, crusher houses, and grinding circuits need glazing that protects personnel while maintaining visibility of the process. Thick polycarbonate panels (typically 10-15mm solid sheet) provide that protection without the weight penalty of laminated glass. The panels are lighter, easier to replace during shutdowns, and will not produce lethal glass fragments if they are hit.
Drill rig and excavator operator cabins benefit from the same approach: a polycarbonate windscreen absorbs fly-rock and debris impacts that would crack or shatter a glass windscreen, keeping the operator safe without obstructing their view of the work face.
Exclusion Zone Barriers and Blast Screens
Where blast exclusion zones require physical barriers rather than just distance, polycarbonate panels mounted in steel frames provide a transparent blast screen that lets supervisors observe the blast area from a protected position. Yellow mining-spec HDPE is used for the opaque lower sections of blast barriers where visibility is not needed but fragment containment and high visibility are critical.
For permanent barrier installations, we supply panels with countersunk bolt holes on standard centres so they slot into existing steelwork. For temporary blast screens used during construction or shutdown blasting, lighter-gauge panels with quick-release fixings allow rapid setup and removal.
Hard-Coated and UV-Stabilised Options
Standard polycarbonate is softer than glass and will haze over time in abrasive dust environments. For control room glazing and operator cabin windscreens where long-term clarity matters, we supply hard-coated polycarbonate with an abrasion-resistant surface layer that extends the clear service life significantly. All outdoor-facing panels are UV-stabilised as standard to prevent yellowing under prolonged sun exposure.
Thickness Selection and Panel Sizing
The right thickness depends on the blast assessment: stand-off distance, charge weight, confinement, and the structural capacity of the frame. For general fly-rock protection on operator cabins and control rooms, 10mm solid polycarbonate is a common starting point. Higher-risk applications near blast zones may call for 12-15mm or multi-layer laminated panels. We can supply material data and put you in touch with blast-assessment engineers who work with polycarbonate systems.
Panels are CNC routed to your frame dimensions with bolt holes on the correct centres. Edges are finished smooth for gasket seating. We supply single panels through to full window sets for control room refurbishments and new-build cabins.
