Balcony Privacy Without Blocking the Light

Apartment and unit balconies are often close enough to neighbours that the space feels exposed, but blocking the view with a solid screen defeats the purpose of having an outdoor area. Perspex Frost sheet solves this by diffusing the view in both directions while still letting natural light flood through, keeping the balcony bright and open rather than boxed in.

Because acrylic is roughly half the weight of glass, balcony screen panels can be installed without the heavy-duty framing and structural engineering that glass balustrade infill panels require, making them a practical retrofit for existing balconies where adding significant weight is not an option.

Material Options for Elevated Installations

For balconies up to about three storeys in sheltered locations, acrylic sheet in 6-8mm thickness provides a good balance of rigidity, clarity, and weight. Above three storeys, or on balconies exposed to strong prevailing winds, polycarbonate sheet is the safer choice. It is virtually unbreakable and flexes under wind load rather than cracking.

Perspex Tints in smoke, bronze, or grey are popular for contemporary apartment buildings where the screen needs to complement a dark or metallic balustrade finish, while frosted white suits lighter architectural styles.

Strata and Body Corporate Considerations

Many strata schemes have rules about balcony modifications, including screen materials, colours, and fixing methods. Acrylic and polycarbonate screens are typically easier to get approved than permanent glass installations because they are lighter, reversible, and do not require structural certification in most cases.

We can supply panels in a specific colour or finish to meet body corporate requirements, and panels can be installed with non-permanent fixings if the strata scheme requires modifications to be reversible.

Wind Protection as a Bonus

Beyond privacy, balcony screens act as effective wind barriers, making elevated outdoor spaces usable on days when unscreened balconies would be uncomfortable. This wind-blocking effect is often the primary reason residents install screens, with privacy as a secondary benefit.

For maximum wind protection, panels should extend from the balustrade top to the soffit above, with minimal gaps between panels and frame. We can advise on panel layout to optimise wind protection for your specific balcony configuration.

Ordering Balcony Screen Panels

Panels are cut to your exact balustrade dimensions on our CNC router, with holes pre-drilled for your chosen fixing method. We recommend stainless steel fixings for all balcony installations to prevent corrosion staining.

Provide your balustrade dimensions, floor level, and preferred finish, and we will recommend a material and thickness suited to your exposure and quote panels ready to install.
