What is MDF?

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is the workhorse engineered timber panel for cabinetmaking, shopfitting, signage and CNC-routed letterwork. It is made from fine wood fibres bonded under heat and pressure into a dense, uniform board with no grain to chase. The result is a smooth, stable panel that machines to a clean edge and takes paint, laminate and vinyl beautifully. For anything that gets a painted or laminated finish, MDF is usually the right call.

Grades we supply

Standard MDF is the everyday choice for interior cabinetry and signage. Moisture-resistant MR-MDF, usually green-tinted, tolerates splash and humidity for kitchen and bathroom work, though it is still not for direct outdoor exposure. Fire-rated FR-MDF meets fire ratings for compliant commercial fit-outs and is available on request. Coloured, dyed-through MDF such as Valchromat is available on indent for high-end decorative and signage work, so ask us for current colours and lead time. Standard stock is natural, a light tan.

Thicknesses and sizes

We carry MDF in a range of thicknesses from thin backing boards through to heavy substrate, in standard 2400 x 1200 mm sheets and other formats. Thinner boards suit drawer bottoms, backings and laminated panels; 16 mm and 18 mm are the workhorses for cabinet doors and drawer fronts; thicker boards suit dimensional signage and built-up letters. Buy full sheets from stock or have your panels cut to size.

Cutting, finishing and fixing

MDF cuts cleanly with standard woodworking tools and machines to a flawless edge. Seal cut edges with primer or PVA before your topcoat so they do not soak up paint unevenly. MDF generates fine dust when cut, so always use dust extraction or a proper mask. For load-bearing fixings, pre-drill and use coarse-thread MDF screws, because raw MDF will split if you drive standard screws into the edge under load.

MDF or plywood?

If you need strength, stiffness or a panel that carries load, plywood is the better choice. For a painted or laminated finish, cabinet doors, drawer fronts, signage substrate and decorative panels, MDF wins on smoothness and edge quality. Not sure which suits your job?
